This eLearning is approved by the Royal Society of Biology. Training course approval is an independent review process that recognises relevant, high quality training. Upon completion of this course, attendees can claim 18 CPD points.

Who should complete this course?

This eLearning is aimed at anyone acting as a practitioner providing advice, support or oversight of the management, control or containment of biological risk, including:

  • Health, safety and biosafety advisors and professionals
  • Facility mangers and coordinators
  • Managers (including science and operations)

Note: The material presented in this eLearning is based primarily on universal principles, such as those outlined by the World Health Organization (WHO). While this eLearning mentions specific UK and international law at different points, this is to provide examples of how some of those fundamental principles are legislated. Hence, this eLearning is open to audiences from any country or geographical location.

Course description

Some biological agents have the potential to cause harm to people, animals or the environment (e.g. plants) through an infection. These biological hazards are known as pathogens. Work with pathogens (e.g. research, diagnostics, manufacturing) must be suitably regulated and managed to prevent harm to people, animals, and the environment that may result from an accidental exposure.

This eLearning provides an introduction to the principles that govern the management of risks associated with biological hazards (i.e. biorisks). It is divided into five parts:

  1. National Regulatory Framework
  2. Principles of Biorisk Management
  3. Engagement and Impact
  4. Monitoring
  5. Ethics and Sustainability

Note: Contents of this eLearning are also included in the Biorisk Advisor Training.
